Albanian thoughts:
Spent a week here in April 2024 – so many positives …
Purely electronic passport gates at Tirana airport – an advantage if low on passport stamp space? Swift bus into town centre. Euros very widely accepted, 1:1 with the local Lek currency. Felt safe, met many great people and enjoyed a lot of raki; wine rather so-so, beer better … Trains are close to non-existent; negotiating the minibus service involves arriving and paying on the spot – found it straightforward; typical price: Tirana to Gjirokastra – 4 hours - £10 ..; saw stunning mountain scenery in last 2 hours, and when crossing the mountains from this town to Sarande port (1hr15, £3.30). Accommodation costs very favourable: enjoyed flats at £9 pppn. From Sarande, easy enough to catch a ferry or hydrofoil to Corfu, as a return airport – ca/ £20 single, 30-60 mins. Albaniatourguide proved a very useful online resource. Looking forward to next trip: apparently 12 degrees even in January …

Gjirokastra stands as an enchanting and historically rich destination deserving of exploration. If you seek an unparalleled and genuine Albanian adventure, Gjirokastra emerges as the ideal destination to embark upon. Cheap hotels and cheap food prices

Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.

The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it is rundown with only the bazaar and some houses being maintained to a level fit for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you go away from the bazaar especially at night it feels really lonely and sad. Gjirokaster has become very touristic in the past few years with the old bazaar being constantly crowded with youths from Western European countries who do not respect the place and openly smoke hashish and get drunk.
The road to get to the old town is a traditional stone path that while beautiful is a disaster because it destroys your car's suspension, has very steep grades and if another car comes from the other direction good luck! Because of this and the lack of parking in the old town (even among hotels that advertise having parking) you become a prisoner of the old town. During the summer because of the type of stone the city is built of (also found in the mountain Gjirokaster is built on) it is very hot even during the night making the entire experience very unpleasant.
Most museums/attractions are basic and the few English descriptions that can be found are very nationally charged which reminds me more of the rhetoric of the 1940s than 2023. The vast majority of Albanians, even those who work in this "tourism industry" cannot speak English at all or speak it very badly making communication difficult and moreover they are not really friendly with tourists.
Gjirokaster like Albania in general is about as expensive as Greece or even Italy while effectively offering a touristic product akin to a 3rd world country. Unless corruption is rooted out, Albanians stop emigrating and the economy and democratic institutions develop I frankly do not think I will ever visit Gjirokaster again.

When in Albania, Gjirokaster should definitely be on your list. The views from the castle are amazing and a visit to the Bazaar for those Instagram pictures is also a must.
But what we enjoyed the most was the travel between Berat and Gjirokaster. Make sure to stop at Tepelene to fill your water bottles with some fresh water and try some deliciously baked fresh trout. Find a small road next to the river, drive in and get yourself wet in the pristine clear water.
Beautiful hotel with traditional exterior façades located within a very short walk of castle and bazaar. Attentive service. Comfortable room, good shower, excellent breakfast with eggs made to order. Front desk, bar area staff helpful and gave excellent restaurant recommendation that was not in the usual listings. Parking on site but a bit crowded at times. 5G or 4G broadband throughout hotel. The superior room is very spacious. The hotel is quiet except the bar area where there is low volume and pleasant popular music.
Hotel Kalemi 2 is the definition of albanian hospitality. The rooms are beautiful and the breakfast is delicious. Here's the most important point: one of us had broken his foot just before arriving, and Francesca went out of her way for us, and made sure everything was adapted for us. The food at breakfast was prepared with love and brought to my friend's room. Francesca and another person of staff helped my friend walk to the car. This is exceptional and for that, I highly recommend this hotel. Thank you !
The hotel is better than the pictures shown on Booking.com. It is close to shops and the castle. The staff is wonderful, starting with the owner and on with reception and kitchen personnel. I have never experienced a service as excellent. Everyone going above and beyond to make sure we were satisfied.
The room was very spacious, beautiful and the bathroom very modern.
The breakfast was outstanding. High quality food and very pleasant service.
I highly recommend Hotel Kalemi.
Manjola and Nardi are excellent hosts. They went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Beautiful garden, surrounded by flowers and amazing scents. Comfortable room for 2 adults and 2 children. Manjola prepares tasty breakfast. We also enjoyed the veranda upstairs at night. Nardi helped us park the car (gjirokastra has very narrow and hilly streets). Location was also great. 5 mins walk to old bazaar and then going uphill up the castle. Great time in gjirokaster!
The location is right in the old bazaar which was amazing. Although hard to get to, the owner came out and helped us right away. Parked our car and carried our luggage up the stairs. The rooms are very clean and very nicely decorated, with a very Albanian and old town feel. The owner also took us up to see the obelisk right outside the hotel with an amazing view of the whole city. The breakfast was also lovely and I truly enjoyed this hotel, can’t recommend it enough
Argyropolis Boutique Hotel was amazing. We had a 10/10 experience. Tatiana was such a welcoming, friendly and thoughtful host.
The property is beautiful, location fantastic and hospitality just out of this world. The room and bathroom were clean, comfortable and beautifully restored.
We loved exploring Gjirokaster but truly believe the experience was perfect because of the property and Tatiana.
The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, breakfast was lovely, and owner was incredible – the hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the old town center, and so he offered rides in and out of town at the drop of a hat. All I had to do was call or message him and he'd pick me up within 5-10 minutes. Amazing service and definitely recommend for anyone visiting Gjirokaster.
- Can't say enough of how amazing our host David was. He was really helpful and we had a great talk with him on our first night there.
- The property sits on a hill top with an amazing views of Gjirokaster and its castle.
- The house is very cosy, clean and comfortable with a great outdoor area.
- The homemade breakfast is better than what you get in a hotel.
We loved the Old Bazaar 1790 hotel. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel occupies a beautiful old mansion and gives you the impression to live in Girokastra's old times. It is very well located but just enough removed from activities to be very quiet. The room was comfortable and the breakfast good. Value for price ratio was excellent.
The hotel is beautiful and the location perfect for exploring Gjirokastër. But what surprised us the most are the wonderful people working in the hotel. It was one of the best experiences during our holiday! Thanks again for the lovely surprise the second time we came this week! The Dutch couple:)
This is the perfect hotel for a weekend getaway in Gjirokaster city. Gorgeous building, and it only gets more breathtaking when you walk in. High quality rooms, and high quality service. The staff at this property are all great! They all go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable.
Beautiful hotel in the heart of Gjirokaster a short walk from the bazaar and castle. Our room was stunning and with traditional architecture. Staff were very friendly and helpful throughout even assisting with directions and parking. Breakfast was excellent. Highly recommended
The hotel is very modern in the old city of Gjirokastër. The breakfast was very tasty. Also the location was perfect for a stroll through the tourist sights. The rooms were very clean and the beds comfortable.
Lovely guest house on the top of the mountain overlooking Gjirokaster. Very nice and helpful owner, cooked us tasty Albanian dinner. Very good value for money. 10 out of 10. Definitely recommend.
Everything, including the breakfast was superb. What a lovely new little hotel . Great to see Albania investing in its hot spots , of which Gjirokaster is certainly one .
Great view with scrumptious breakfast! The staff was friendly and helpful with guiding us with the parking. Hotel is about 10 mins walk from Gjirokaster Bazaar.
Staff was incredibly friendly. Location is right next to the main bazaar and old site center. The hotel decoration is based on traditional Gjirokaster design.
