Shilin is a beautiful place if you like nature, or learn about the different cultures in different villages. However, you might need to spend quite a bit on transport if you want to cover all the different areas as you would require private hire. Hence, travelling alone (like I did) might be quite costly. Be careful of drivers trying to pick you up. Their charges are costly unless you bargain! Some are quite stubborn though. I went to Jiuxiang and the stone forest. The stone forest has a huge crowd, which kinda put me off. There are other areas I would have liked to explore like Guishan and Changhu if not for the lack of budget. Bring along a poncho and umbrella in case of rainy weather.
