Went to Shimoda mid Sept which was lean season for summer adventure so less people around. It offers good beaches and many water activities. Stayed for a week which gives us relaxing time to enjoy the beach and places to see.TeresaJapan - 8.0Scored 8.0

Great town right on the coast, has a number of great beaches nearby and beautiful rocky coastlines and cliffs to see. It is more of a tourist town though, so expect prices of things to be high. Be ready to hear constantly about Commodore Perry and the Black Ships! Some things require you to sign up or buy tickets well in advance; it's worth looking up anything you're interested in trying beforehand to see if it does. Best coffee we had was at the Hana Cafe, best food was the South Cafe.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Beach Inn Shirahama. It's right across the street from a lovely beach and the breakfast was quite nice. We loved the 2 outdoor onsens that are built on the 1F. Great to watch the stars from there amidst the treetops!PeterNetherlands

We enjoyed the outdoor bath, and the BBQ restaurant that is right next door (unfortunately they are doing some expansion/ construction right now, so the area wasn't as scenic). Breakfast was delicious. We were able to walk to the beach pretty easily: downhill about ten minutes to Shirahama Beach (lots of surfers). We also walked 20 minutes to Sotoura Beach the other direction.Emma HunsickerJapan

The building is a quaint open-concept villa that is very clean and cozy considering the beach location. We loved the "kashikiri" private onsen/hot tub on site with ocean views. Will definitely recommend to future visitors to Shirahama or Shimoda.

My room was bigger than most hotel rooms on my journey and had a comfortable double bed, table and a large cupboard. The place is a little outside of Shimoda but a bus stops nearby and takes you to the center in 10 min. Taka is a very friendly and helpful host.
