The city is fun, but...
The city is fun, but...I just spent to much time on the public transportation app. Here is what I learn that would have been most helpful for American travelers.
If all of your party has their own Visa Credit card with tap to pay feature, you are already going to have an easier time!!! It doesn't take any American Express. You have to tap to pay go on the DPO, Ostrava's public transportation. The bus police doesn't always check, but as a visitor this was persistent fear.
If you have a child, who will ride you all the time, or you have a person who doesn't have a Visa with a tap to pay feature. You must only get your bus card at the Ostrava main train station!!!! I went DPO kiosk near an Albert supermarket, as stated on the DPO website! It was not dispensing cards. The city decided to get rid of cards recently, except at the Ostrava Main Train Station!
Don't you bother to bring cash on the public transit. It doesn't take it.
Don't try to get the 3 day pay by the DPO App. The app is broken. I even uploaded an image of my kids' picture and passport, and the app still did not take any money, and did get me a pass. It take 2-3 days for them to approve the photo and passport and but the app was not letting me purchase the 3 day pass. I only know that they still had cards because I sent an email to DPO after my stay and they advised me to go to the Ostrava main train station next time. Every regular Ostrava person, I talked to said the cards are not available, but I guess they have them only in one place.

Ostrava is constantly changing for better.y first visit was back in min 1990s and it was a horrible, dirty, industrial place. Now it is green, mostly clean and fun. The former Vitkovice area refurbished, remade to an excellent art, event and historic place with that industrial background defo worth visit and other places as well.

To be honest,Ostrava was chosen as the last night of my holiday in Hungary as it was convenient for travelling to Krakow for my flight home the next day.(Yes, I know it's in the Czech Republic, but my holiday was in Hungary).
My interests are football and railways, and I knew Ostrava was an excellent destination for a railway enthusiast like myself.
As for the city itself, apart from the Forum complex, which was excellent, I didn't see anything to particularly attracr me, although it was dark most of the time, so no disrespect to the city in case I just missed its great attractions. However I am aware it is an industrial city.

Ostrava is growing up really fast!
Ostrava is growing up really fast! I have not been there for couple of years and I was surprised how many new cool places are there and how many different activities you can plan there. It is definitely worth a visit! Unfortunately the local airport still does not provide any flights except only one from London and Warsaw so if you fly, like we did, you have to go from Krakow, Katowice or Prague.

Ok, so you are looking at a 300000-strong city, which was a mining / smelter / ironworks city for well over a 100 years. This entire business was shut down in the 1990s. Any critical review has to take this into account. The heritage site of Dolni Vitkovice, Landek, Bolt Tower definitely worth a visit. Check it out! The rest of the city is a mix of communist era style places and relatively few older buildings - you can still spend a day walking around the centre, along the rivers etc. Sometimes you may feel you are going back in time 30-40 years. Climbing up nearby areas (slag heap / Halda Ema?) is also something you would rarely see - and consider the environmental effect that it may have. Beers are good, mexican restaurant too!
The stuff that work for the hotel are incredible. I accidentally booked the wrong dates and they immediately help me with cancelation process. Helpful and friendly. Please have in mind they don't speak English, but this is not an issue nowa days.
Instructions they provided were clear and correct. No issue with check in and check out. Everything went super smooth.
The room was warm and nice. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom was clean. It is good value for this price.
It is 3km away from the center, but we enjoyed the night walk.
We were in Ostrava to see Icehockey. Hotel Trio was excellent base for our long weekend. Easy to get to Ostravar arena and after the games we enjoyed the offering of Stodolni bar street. Which is located round the corner.
As mentioned in many earlier reviews the breaksfast was very good.
We were early in Ostrava but got an early check in to our room. That was a nice supprise. Also the process itself was very easy. Good service in all.
The hotel is a moderately new facility. Not a huge building, more of a cosy place. The wellness zone, even though at additional cost, was a nice addition to our stay. Free parking on the other hand balanced this spending.
Well connected with city centre via a tram line, or within a walking distance (15 min).
Very easy to get to Ostrava Arena thanks to tram station being immediately next to the hotel. Same tram takes you straight to the train station and the bus station. Room was cleaner than expected given the low price. Historic buildings nearby add provide a bit of atmosphere in a largely industrial area.
The manager is really nice, he reccomended me touristic things in Ostrava,
The hostel is a very good value for money, it's close to the central station and there's a bus and tram stop nearby it's very easy to get to/from by bus to anywhere in the city.
I had a great stay, highly recommend.
I recently had the pleasure of staying at SoFi apartment in Ostrava, and I must say it was a fantastic experience. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the apartment's cleanliness and modern design. The space was well-maintained and had everything I needed for a comfortable stay.
The property is located somewhat away from the city center, but you can easily reach it by tram. The hotel is absolutely good value for its price, ideal for a one night sleep over. Can recommend.
Hotel Max Simek reopens after a break. The biggest advantage is the location: about 100-150 m from the Ostrava hlavni railway station. Spacious room. Breakfast included in price
Nice room with private jacuzzi and sauna. I think it is rare to find such facilities inside the room in any hotels nearby. There is also a private parking for the car
This was not the first time we stayed here, and the hotel and owners are still keeping the level of quality and comfort. Everything was great as usual. Thanks!
Nice hotel with a good location. Close to tram/t-bus stations so can get in 10 minutes to Vitkovice or to train station. Good breakfast, comfortable rooms.
