The staff went out of their way to make us dinner although we arrived just before the kitchen was about to close. They also helped with early breakfast as we needed to leave before 8am. Best hospitality we've had in very long time. Really nice relaxed vibe and comfortable room.

Charming old building, not sure if it's 17 or 18C. Big room, pretty view out of back window, big "sleigh" beds, which were comfortable. Bathrooms quite basic and a bit tired, but that was fine - they were clean and the whole thing good value for money.

This is a small hotel with about 8 rooms in the picturesque village of Barnard Castle. There is room for parking directly beside the hotel with easy access from the main road. The town centre is a short walk away and you are almost immediately able to access the picturesque countryside that you likely came for.
We were warmly welcomed by the staff and well looked after during our stay. The accommodation was more than adequate for our needs, clean and tidy, comfortable beds and a good nights sleep.
The food was delicious. The breakfast choice is your normal range, the quality is high and the food well presented. You’ll certainly find the usual requirements for your brekkie and if you need anything you just have to ask.
We ate two evening meals in the hotel and they were delicious and to a high standard. Steak was cooked to the requested level and fish was battered perfectly.
Staff welcome you with a smile and charm that County Durham is famous for. A special mention to Saff for looking after us. She even took time to show me a few of the local sights. Thanks Saff.

Favourite pub was the Blue Bell very friendly and how a pub use to be.

First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.

Lovely small town with lots to see and do in surrounding area
Pubs are good and a great choice for eating from breakfast to evening meal
Hecklers cottage was lovely where we stayed but house keeping appalling good job plenty places to eat out
Such a shame !!
We would love to stay again
The Owners Roy & Rima are such an amazing couple, they really made us feel special even though we were only booked for 1 night. The bedroom (en suite) was enormous, very quaint as you would expect from a 12th Century building (the beer garden wall is part of the old Castle!) but with all the modern amenities we needed! The food is outstanding & the beer & ale choices are plentiful. Wish we could have stayed another night or 2, there's a lot to do & see in this area. We will definitely be back but for longer next time!
The hosts (Glenda and Daniele) were wonderful and very kind. We had two rooms: two of us were in the garden room, which was absolutely wonderful. I stayed in the single person room (room 1) which was quite small, but equipped with every amenity and comfortable. Both rooms were on the garden and very quiet at night.
The breakfast was the best English breakfast I have ever had in many trips to the UK!
Parking on the street was free, and it is 10 minute walk to the town centre.
We visited Barnard Castle from US (Brooklyn NY) for a family wedding. We were not familiar with the area, but loved how the home is tucked away on a quiet street yet walking distance to center of town . Don't forget to look at the helpful binder and sit in the little garden. I really appreciated the treats on arrival as we had a very long train journey. The house is packed with charm and kept very clean. I only wish we could have stayed more than two nights.
The location was perfect! We were so close to the centre and had a lovely view of Barnard Castle at the bottom of the road. We really appreciated the hamper left by the hosts and all the facilities in the property such as fridge/freezer, washing machine and dishwasher came in good use. There were so many nice restaurants and lovely walks nearby. We we really pleased that there was a space to park one car right outside the property.
Really great place to stay, gorgeous local area. The room I had in the courtyard was exceptional, cosy but enough space. Decent comfy bed, powerful shower and so quiet you cannot hear any other guests. The breakfast was delicious and I also had an evening meal there too which was superb. There were a few of us staying with our dogs and they made us feel very welcome. Would definitely book again!
stopped half way on a trip to Edinburgh. good location 10 mins drive to barnard castle. nice walks around hotel. went in november rooms were nice and warm. garden looked excellent but didnt use to cold.. bar at night reasonably priced. breakfast just right not to much but quality of produce was great . staff very attentive and polite. will def stay again . spa looked lovely tho we didnt use.
Great hotel in the middle of Barnard Castle. The room was lovely with plenty of tea and coffee and there was a good choice of food for breakfast. We had an evening meal there which was also very good and in lovely surroundings. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. There is a small car park at the back of the property but also had no trouble parking on the high street.
Carole made us so welcome and her attention to detail is flawless. Our room was beautiful and comfortable and our breakfast each morning was delicious.
Again, Carole was so attentive to our needs, whether it be activities to pursue or places to dine in Barnard Castle and beyond.
I have nothing but praise for Newgate House with a promise to return.
All out love.

We enjoyed our stay in Barnard Castle. The staff at the Old Well Inn were friendly and very helpful. The room was comfortable and immaculate. The location is central for the town. We will go back to the Old Well Inn again and make it a regular place to stop over. We recommend it. Philip and Joan Forster, Kilsyth, Glasgow.
We loved everything about this hotel. The staff were all so friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. The room was large, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent. Bar prices very reasonable. Lovely sunny beer garden. Great location with free parking.
The location was good for access to Barnard Castle, Bowes Museum and Scotch Corner.
Our courtyard room was perfectly adequate, if a little small. The bathroom was modern and the shower pressure was excellent.
Great location and our very first farm house stay. It could not have been better. The peace and quiet but always near the animals. We worth getting off the regular track.
