The host lady is very friendly. Though she doesn't speak English, she kept checking on us and made sure we had everything we needed
The dinner portion set was huge, I was very full by the time I finished my meal. The highlight of the dinner meal is the charcoal grilled fish that she had prepared about 1 to 1.5 hours before the dinner served. The vegetables tempura are soooo yummy as well as the vegetable soup.
The room is spacious and could easily accommodate a family of 4. The kimono set is provided along with other toiletries. Our bed was made of 2 layers of futton, and I should have asked one more futton to add extra comfort. It was a bit too hard for my back. I would recommend trying the bed when you arrive and checking if you need more layers. Don't wait till you go to bed, as you won't be able to ask the host as she has gone upstairs sleeping.
Location wise, only 7 mins walking up from Ainokuraguchi bus stop. You will find the village is very charming and serene, not too crowded by tourists, the reason we chose this location to experience the real Japanese country life. In the morning, around 7.30 ish, there was a sound of gong, hit with longer intervals then followed by intense ringing bells from the Shrine-liked house just behind the house.
The toilet is super duper modern equipped with all sensors that allow you to do and finish your business without hassle. The toilet seat opens automatically when you come in the cubicle. Once you get off, it flushes down, and soon after, the seat will close. We have seen this smart toilet before somewhere in Japan, but we weren't expecting to find it in this traditional Japanese home deep into the highlands.
Thank you so much for the host lady for providing such a great experience for us.

The atmosphere of the accommodation is very good, especially when spring arrives. Surrounded by beautiful nature in the old style. But it is modern and comfortable.
There are musical instruments to play.
The home owner and his team are very hospitable. Suitable for staying alone or in groups.
At Akaokan, guests can relax in the spacious public hot-spring baths and visit the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated a 20-minute drive away.

We felt Ainokura was the best of the thatched gassho-zukuri...
We felt Ainokura was the best of the thatched gassho-zukuri villages to stay over-night in-least tour buses. It's very different after the buses leave, so stay over-night. Late afternoons and mornings are so nice, and you will really see and stay in a very traditional home with a family.
Nostalgic and good room size. Separate dining on the same floor. Very traditional set up. It’s just us that we have knee issues, making getting up from Japanese seats challenging. If there’s a small table with normal height chair like another Ryokan we stayed with, would have been perfect. The lady who served us throughout the stay was helpful and friendly. When we were trying to locate the hotel after alighting the bus, she came out to receive us. By the way, the buses to and from Shirakawa-go stops right in front of the hotel.
Very friendly and helpful staff! It was amazing to stay in a traditional Japanese thatched house (over 300 years old). The accommodation was warm and had a very cosy lounge area (with guitars and other instruments to play) and lots of cooking space. The location was also quite spectacular with views of the city at night and located next to a lake, park, and sports facilities. There is also a bus stop directly outside of the property. Definitely a must if you're planning to stay in Nanto.
It was the most beautiful Japanese experience during my first week in Japan. The food was very tasty each and every time. The room was so quiet and warm, we slept very well. The view on the mountains was breathtaking. I loved the onsen experience. In the first day we saw the Gasho house museum just across the road from the hotel, and on the second day took the bus, which stops just outside the hotel, to Shirakawa-go. It was perfect experience.
Staff at reception was very friendly and efficient. They even performed a song and dance in the evening even tho the hotel didn't have many guests. Rooms were nicely renovated and clean. Dinner and breakfast were adequate. Enjoyed both the indoor and outdoor baths. Good value for a very relaxing stay. Thank you to the staff at the hotel who contributed to a very pleasant stay.
I love this secluded hotel in the mountains! The hotel has a retro style but is very clean. The meals are included and are excellent. During my stay, I had the onsen practically all to myself and I enjoy the outdoor onsen looking out into the forest the most!
Room has all you need, full bathroom, ammenities, air conditioning, it's very clean, and all the staff is always nice and friendly. The hotel is next to a shopping mall and another shops and restaurants. A very convenient place to stay at Fukuno.
An older style hotel, well used perhaps but clean and comfortable for all that.
A restaurant in the hotel served an excellent evening meal (not in the room price) as well as a full Japanese breakfast included.
Very pleasant stay. It has outdoor onsen and food provided by the hotel was good
we choose to stay in tatami style room
and we love it . hotel provide shuttle to go to places of interest too.
The dinner and breakfast is simple and sufficient. The open air onsen is excellent. Overall, the hotel is value for money. Suitable for onsen lovers with budget limitation.
The hotel is located on a mountain with a great view. The room was quite big but had no private bathroom only toilet. However there was a public bath which was very nice.
Very nice traditional Japanese style hotel with excellent traditional breakfast and dinner! The outdoor onsen is also very nice and a great experience!
