I love Chaves, small ancient town which has a river going through it with its own Roman bridge going across it… wonderful restaurants, the food is amazing here in the north of Portugal! Amazing places to stay with fabulous Portuguese restaurants! You’re also close to one of the nicest wine regions in the world! If you drive go trough Régua up the Douro where the grapes are grown! Unbelievable gorgeous, truly stunning

The bridge that dates from Roman times and is normally shown...
The bridge that dates from Roman times and is normally shown in photos is the interesting bit of Chaves. The rest is tired and seems to have suffered economically. The last place we stayed was Guimares. I'd stay 2 days there and not stay in Chaves next time.
That said, apparently there are quite a lot of historical Catholic things here, but not my scene at all.

We really, really liked Chaves.
We really, really liked Chaves. We stayed in the Castelo Hotel which is superb, excellent room - with tea and coffee making facilities! We felt we got a lot of hotel for our money. Very clean and comfortable with excellent staff, helpful and friendly. The castle (museum admission price €1, well worth it just for the views from the top) and its immediate neighbourhood is close by and pleasant to stroll around. An easy walk down to the river brings you to the Roman bridge, a perfect place to sit in the sun and lose an afternoon over a beer or two.
Our first evening meal we had at Taska das Caldas and wished we’d spent our second evening there, too. It’s “characterful”, an “experience” but in a good way! Very friendly host greeted us with a white port, then, because we couldn’t decide on starters, brought lots of lovely taster sized portions. The mains were excellent. No room for dessert we just finished with coffee and were bombarded with shots of various águardentes. Didn’t half sleep well!
The only disappointment was wanting to walk round the park only to find it closed for works.

The city is amazing.
The city is amazing. It has grown so much since I last been there some 30 years ago. The thermae museum is for free and it's very informative, restaurants are abundant and serve great food. Bars ensure some nightlife and the river has many options of entertainment. The kid's park on the main square near the Tamega is of superb quality

Chaves is a very interesting and picturesque town.
Chaves is a very interesting and picturesque town. It has lots of nice, reasonably priced restaurants and bars. We found a nice restaurant just down the stone steps from the Roman bridge. The "house red" was excellent.
It is a nice place to stay with spa facilities, ideal for a little escape.
Good breakfast. There is a restaurant, and the meals are ok, but a little expensive.
If you like tranquility and calm days I would recomend you to stay only from monday to friday, because in weekends the hotel and facilities are very crowdy, to much guests for me.
We've stayed from thrusday to saturday and the difference was huge, even the breakfast was very much enjoyable in friday than saturday.
Situated just outside of Chavez and near the Spanish border, this is a perfect jumping-off point for journeys around northern Portugal, and seems to be a hub of activity around the town, especially the restaurant. The restaurant was lovely and had huge portions of regional cuisine. The staff is incredibly nice, and the proprietor is a genial host. Just a great slice of life in northern Portugal.
This was our 3rd visit in 9 months and we have another booked in July. For us it is conveniently placed and excellent value for money, if you want a 5* hotel, then pay 5* prices. The owners and staff are lovely, very friendly and informative, the same this time as our first visit last year. It's why we returned.
Easy stay with free parking inside the walls. Restaurant on site is good. My standard room was comfortable, warm (November) and I like that it has real wood floors. One can easily walk to the castle and Roman bridge. Excellent breakfast. Chaves seems a beautiful town. I hope to stay longer next time.
Fantastic hotel, with excellent staff. Very accommodating, great facilities and the room was just amazing! We had a private bathroom and a small balcony, the AC worked amazingly (which was a must with the heat) and everything was sparkly clean. We can't wait to come back! :)
Hotel was very clean, beds were very comfortable and the food was excellent. I can’t speak a word of Portuguese, but the staff could not do enough to help out. The owner even insisted I park my motorbike in his garage. Fantastic place to stay.
Spacious room very clean with terrace and table and chairs - very peaceful . It is a mile or so outside the town of Chaves. The centre of Chaves has a great river with pleasant green areas and walkways along the river - well worth a visit.
An excellent overnight stay in Chaves. The Petrus Hotel is in a wonderful location near to the castle and all the beautiful parts of haves. The room was comfortable, the staff were friendly and I really enjoyed my stay!
Service/ staff friendly and helpful, room clean and meets essential needs, location the best to visit the town, a beautiful hotel, and a convenient breakfast both adults and kids can find their favorite items.
This place is a small well-decorated hotel, near the center of the city and the popular riverside area. You can walk from here to most of the city, the breakfast is also a highlight.
My favorite stay during a two month tour of Spain and Portugal. Hospitality was excellent, breakfast was home-baked, and possibly the best bed I've ever slept on!
