Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.
The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.
The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.
The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.
Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

Coimbra is a delightful town to visit. The town is architecturally pleasing, with clean, safe, streets, and a refreshing lack of graffiti. There is a good choice of hotels and restaurants, and those that we patronized were of good quality, with helpful staff, all of whom, in our experience spoke good English. Recommended

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.JulesUnited Kingdom - 10Scored 10

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. Coimbra is a great city with very interesting historical sites and churches. Interesting shops and restaurants. the Igreja santo Christo is especially good to visit situated in a lovely square. The adjoining old cafe has a wonderful atmosphere with a performance of FADO (traditional Portuguese music ) every weekday from 6pm

Five-minute walk from Coimbra A train station; online pix meant we knew exactly which building to look for. This is a charming and old-fashioned hotel that antique-lovers should really enjoy; it's like being on the set of a 1920s or earlier movie, and has an old-fashioned wood-lined elevator, complete with folding bench. We loved the place, but ... The one perturbing thing was the lack of in-room Wifi, but there are lots of comfortable spaces to connect on the main floor. For a couple of vacation days, though, this was not a big deal.SusanCanada

Aurélio and Bruno have been very kind and Mariana was super nice. If I am going back to Coimbra (and I know I will) I won't even bother looking for accommodation somewhere else but I would definitely stay with them again. Thank you for the nice experience!

We stayed for one night as part of a one-week holiday in western Portugal. Limited free parking was available outside the hotel. Our room was clean and comfortable and on two levels with the bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor. The buffet breakfast was good. Ismael, the host was absolutely the best out of all of our Portugal stays. He made sure that everything was satisfactory and checked on us during our stay. Ismael not only picked us up from the bus station upon our arrival, but took us on a tour of Coimbra before taking us to the apartment. He also drove us to the train station for our departure.

The cathedral is not to be missed, and the university, which sits atop the city (very high), is the oldest in Portugal, one of the oldest in the world. The library and church are a "must see", as are the gardens. The location and views from the grounds are very good. Coffee machine, dishwasher, good set of dishes, TV, great internet I have never seen in Portugal, you name it you have it. Backyard and garden in front are definitely value added. The owner is very nice and helpful, however she does not speak English beyond the very basics. Parking is not a problem and location is OK if you are planning trips by car outside of Coimbra.
