Lovely hotel, great location for seeing the university and library. Be prepared there is a steep walk to the centre, this wasn't an issue for us but may be for some people.

Great room with a view out across the town. Sat out on the balcony for some time late into the evening just looking out across the hills and town. Restaurant also with good views out and the food was quite superb.

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.
The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.
The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.
The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.
Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.
Coimbra is a delightful town to visit. The town is architecturally pleasing, with clean, safe, streets, and a refreshing lack of graffiti.
There is a good choice of hotels and restaurants, and those that we patronized were of good quality, with helpful staff, all of whom, in our experience spoke good English. Recommended

Our accommodation had the perfect location; we walked everywhere. The nearby restaurants were serving great food. Our street had 2 nice restaurants that were frequented by locals, and the prices were very reasonable compared to the more touristy places.

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers.
Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. We stayed one night, but could have easily stayed another night.

Five-minute walk from Coimbra A train station; online pix meant we knew exactly which building to look for.
This is a charming and old-fashioned hotel that antique-lovers should really enjoy; it's like being on the set of a 1920s or earlier movie, and has an old-fashioned wood-lined elevator, complete with folding bench. We loved the place, but ...
The one perturbing thing was the lack of in-room Wifi, but there are lots of comfortable spaces to connect on the main floor. For a couple of vacation days, though, this was not a big deal.
My friend and I are travelling Portugal on the road and we booked the apartment for 1 night stay: we loved everything about the room and the process, from pre check-in to check-out and everything was communicated clearly, without leaving any room for "misunderstanding". Aurélio and Bruno have been very kind and Mariana was super nice. If I am going back to Coimbra (and I know I will) I won't even bother looking for accommodation somewhere else but I would definitely stay with them again. Thank you for the nice experience!
This is a boutique hotel located just below the University Library in central Coimbra. We stayed for one night as part of a one-week holiday in western Portugal. Limited free parking was available outside the hotel. Our room was clean and comfortable and on two levels with the bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor. The buffet breakfast was good. The price was high compared to some of the other hotels we stayed at in Portugal. All the staff were extremely helpful and went out of their way to meet our needs.
The location was perfect and having two bathrooms was a big convenience. The apartment had everything we could possibly need. Ismael, the host was absolutely the best out of all of our Portugal stays. He made sure that everything was satisfactory and checked on us during our stay. Ismael not only picked us up from the bus station upon our arrival, but took us on a tour of Coimbra before taking us to the apartment. He also drove us to the train station for our departure.
The apartment in Coimbra was spacious and well-equipped, with a great balcony overlooking the city. The cathedral is not to be missed, and the university, which sits atop the city (very high), is the oldest in Portugal, one of the oldest in the world. The university library and the chapel of Sao Miguel are all well worth seeing, advise to purchase tickets (and times) before arriving. The botanical garden is a pleasant place to spend some time relaxing.
The renovation of the casa was exceptional. Very modern touches while keeping the historic details. The mattress was the most comfortable yet in all of our Portugal stays. Great communication. Overall a very special stay. The host left a bottle of wine and there were a lot of spices, cooking supplies, coffee pods, etc. We appreciated the casa allowing dogs to stay. We will definitely come back again at some point the future. Overall, highly recommended.
Quinta das Lagrimas is a hotel bursting with charm and character. There is much to explore, see and do. The library and church are a "must see", as are the gardens. The location and views from the grounds are very good. The staff were fantastic, helpful and genuinely enthusiastic about the hotel and it's fascinating history. We enjoyed a excellent meal in the lovely and friendly restaurant with many extras and taster dishes added in by the staff.
The apartment has literally everything you need to live. Coffee machine, dishwasher, good set of dishes, TV, great internet I have never seen in Portugal, you name it you have it. Backyard and garden in front are definitely value added. The owner is very nice and helpful, however she does not speak English beyond the very basics. Parking is not a problem and location is OK if you are planning trips by car outside of Coimbra.
Centrally located, thoughtfully decorated quaint studio that had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. Easy to access with codes provided for the front doors and unit doors. Unit was clean, and the staff was very friendly. Coimbra is a must see, and as is the case with most of Portugal, very hilly. Bring flat, comfortable footwear! Thank you for a lovely stay at Sofia Studios!
Staff were very welcoming. Hotel was clean and easy to find. Room is very unique and quirky. Our room was definitely geared towards couples. No privacy for bathing/shower and limited privacy for toilet ( has door but not enclosed.) overall, it was good for our short stay in Coimbra. I did enjoy the breakfast being brought to room.
Room also had beautiful view of the city.
Location is excellent..almost directly across from Coimbra A train station. Decent facilities. A special recommendation to the staff’ and especially to Denise, who helped us with a hotel booking in Porto..she called the check in person in Porto and explained to him when we would arrive in Porto for check in. Her professional manner and kindness deserve special recognition.
Since I visited Coimbra for work, I didn't spend much time in the hotel, but I really got a good sleep- room was nice and beds very comfortable.
WiFi signal was very strong and breakfast was really tasty. You can get some snacks from the bar, Stuff was helpful, and the location was very good- 10 min from the center itself, 5 min from the river.
Would recommend!
Location is excellent as it is very close, walking distance to Coimbra A train station and Praça do Comércio where there's plenty of restaurants and shopping. Also within walking distance, about 15 - 20 minutes over the bridge to Portugal dos Pequenitos. Hotel was clean and comfortable. Great hotel value if you're not spending a lot of time in your room!
One of the best places were I’ve stayed in Portugal. Everything isn’t just great, but GREAT! Location, view from the window and terrace, breakfast, bathroom, and even free Netflix on TV. On top of that, the service was of the highest standard, with the stuff being very eager to assist us, and give us very valuable information on the city!
The best place in Coimbra and of course in Portugal also. Really great location, good breakfast, and beautiful view on the city. The room was excellent with the jakuzzi, in the room you feel like a queen. Really recommend this place, beautiful. I traveling a lot, but I never see similar place like that before. Wonderful, just amazing.
The hotel stays at an excellent location, 5 minutes away from the heart of the city. The staff was really nice and we were very well welcomed. The room was great and big, clean and really comfy. For sure will be my first choice once I return to Coimbra
Staff was wonderful and it was a clean hotel. It was located in a more residential part of town easy accessible from Coimbra train station (you have to get the train from Coimbra-B, but it’s a 5 minute ride).
Clean hotel, short 15mins walk from bus station and Coimbra B train stn
Good breakfast although if you get caught on a day where a large bus tour is staying, can get a bit hectic
Very cute hotel. Staff were very friendly. Great location. I have been travelling 5 weeks in Spain and Portugal and this was my favourite accommodation
Thank You
the hotel is situated righ across the street from the old city. the view from the room and the balcony was beautiful overlooking the old city of coimbra.
