There are hidden gems in this city that you need to explore.
There are hidden gems in this city that you need to explore. Do your homework before you come then you will find this city very interesting, like i did. Only set back is the frequency of buses. However it was compensated by thr cheap and efficient taxi.
My favourite places Hinoki Village & Old Prison.
I ate at Wenhua Road Nite Market especially recommends Smartfish (Lin Chong Min Shop).

The 'hot spots' - HInoki Village, old prison, Chaiyi Park, etc. - are pleasant enough, but nothing extraordinary. The Tile Museum, however, is the most unique and interesting touristic place in my opinion.

Some pretty areas, but nothing too special.
Some pretty areas, but nothing too special. Very dense, bad traffic and packed streets for such a small town, unpleasant and difficult to get around. No rental bikes at all. Unhelpful tourism desk at the train station send me to places that had already closed and didn't have updated bus times.
Hinoki Village is very pretty and pleasant, and the nearby Jail is an interesting historical site but has no English at all. The Fine Arts museum is very beautiful and pleasant but didn't have much to see. Annoying and difficult to get anywhere due to lack of rental bikes. Annoying, sparse schedule of buses and trains to Alishan made this the only city in Taiwan where I really, really felt the need for private transportation.
Compared to other small towns in Taiwan, there wasn't that much to see and the density was worse than average, with a ton of traffic even on side streets that made exploration unpleasant.

Less bustling than the other cities in Taiwan.
Less bustling than the other cities in Taiwan. The night market here had some of the best food we had had all trip (douhua omg!). Travelling from here to Fenqihu (to go to Alishan) was easy and stress free.
The people here we're very helpful and polite, seeing that we were a little lost.

Commonly underestimated as the mere starting point for the Alishan Forest Rail express - Chiayi itself is a very friendly town with amazing fruits, nice local market vendors and pretty temples and parks to explore. Just grab a map at the tourist information when you arrive at the train station, the maps provided give you some tips for exploring the city. Would totally recommend spending a day there before heading to Alishan, you won't regret it!

We really enjoyed our stay in the city.
We really enjoyed our stay in the city. It's not mentioned in major travel books. Easy to walk, and plenty to see and lounge. Japanese village, huge train park, and new clean museums. American style upstart restaurants. Agreed we were turned away (politely) by some businesses etc.. others that spoke no English welcomed us. Plenty of cultural free park events that we accidentally walked in on or by.
The price was ok, the staff was very friendly and helpful by willing to help me make a call to other cities in Taiwan. The location of the hotel is about 700m from Chiayi Train Station and can be accessible by foot if you are willing to walk slowly.
About 300m away there is a Carrefour supermarket as well as the Wenhua Street Night Market is about 500 m away.
This is an excellent hotel not too far from train station. The staff were frendly and welcoming. The room was a good size and bed was comfortable. The bathroom facilities were excellent. Despite the number of guests it was very quiet and relaxing. Breakfast was superb - a wide choice of food. Highly recommended.
The hotel is beautifully and extravagantly decorated — so fun! It’s perfectly located in the center of town, making it easy to walk and explore Chiayi. Front desk staff was exceedingly helpful in orienting us to the city and helping us get to our destinations.
The kids room was a great addition to this (appealingly) new and clean hotel! The rooms were very comfortable, location within 5 min walk from the Alishan Forest Railway and lots of restaurants and cafes around. Staff was very helpful.
-Nice spacious rooms with good bathroom facilities
-WiFi signal is strong too
-Night Market is less than 2 mins walk from hotel
-Super excellent breakfast
-Car park is available too
-About 15 mins walk to TRA Chiayi train station
The hotel staff was extremly welcoming and showed me everything. It was clean, even tough there were quite a lot of people. The staff also made sure you had everything, even something to eat and drink:)
The hotel is a bit far from the train station, but the busses to Alishan actually stop quite near it (Wenhua Lukou), so it proved conveniently located. The room was clean and comfy, recently renovated.
I like how spacious the room is compared to other hotels generally in Taiwan. The hotel is also located at the CBD whereby the night market, shops and restaurants are all within walking distance.
Excellent service, hotel design is neat and effective.
Free coffee and tea throughout the day with snack including ice cream a big draw. Staff even help to send back stuff I left in the hotel.
Hotel location excellent! It just located opposite jiayi train station, walking 20mins will reach the famous night market (文化路) where you can grab local foods and shop around. Value for money !
Amazing staff (Fina ♥️)
Right next to the train station and plenty of restaurants around.
Super clean, comfy living room, comfortable bed, laundry and patio available.
My home in Chiayi.
Location is just min walk from train station, easy to find. Check in instruction is clear. Hotel willing to let you keep the baggage with them overnight while exploring Alishan.
