Very nice town (even it is a city, but in touristical part, it's a cosy little town with sloped cobblestone streets), VERY NICE people (Bulgarians are our brothers, indeed, I always felt that, as a Romanian).
Well organised, photogenic, good food, nice views and relaxing!

I used to live in Veliko Tarnovo (VT) so I know it pretty well. Being they old capital of Bulgaria, it is steeped in history and is great place for tourists with an interest in Bulgarian history to come and explore.
The Yantra River meanders in a steep valley, through Veliko Tarnovo.
There are a plethora of hotels to stay at and many apartments to rent, along with numerous cafés, bars and restaurants.
The main street winds its way along the hillside and the total length is walkable in about 40 minutes. There are shops of all types and further out of the city, there are super stores - supermarkets, DIY stores and furniture stores.
Taxis are cheap, metered and widely available and can also take you to nearby villages and back.
The city is served a network of buses.
Veliko Tarnovo has a railway station, that connects with Gorna Oryavitsa (a main railway hub) the line runs between Ruse and Stara Zagora. There's also a once daily international train between Bucharest and Istanbul, stopping at Gorna Oryavitsa and Veliko Tarnovo.
There are museums, galleries, a beautiful park, even a visiting circus.
Tsaravets Fortress lies at one end of the city, at the top of a hill.
For those with disabilities, walking is often up and down steps and fairly steep hills and wheelchair access to many places is limited, although this is improving, albeit slowly.
Climate in Veliko Tarnovo is very cold in the winter months of January and February, as low as minus 15°C and it can snow heavily. Summer months are hot.

The free walking tour of the city is excellent.
The free walking tour of the city is excellent. We paid a premium price (50 euro) for a guide around the fortress, but are almost certain we could have found a competent guide for less. The fortress has a rich history, but know that what you see has been rebuilt based on what it might have looked like--there was no written record to know for sure.

My first time in this city since 2008. Very disappointed.
My first time in this city since 2008. Very disappointed. The city has become a tourist trap. No decent place to eat that's not overpriced and with a completely bored and "couldn't be bothered" attitude of the wait staff.
Tsarvets is an overpriced ruin - half of it is a construction site with junk and pipes rolling around waiting to trip people up. I can't believe one of the nation's greatest treasures is so run down. Compared to other smaller museums in Bulgaria, they have done ZERO effort to make it nice, tell a story, have exhibits that transport you into the magical time of the Bulgarian kingdoms. It's like walking around a junkyard parking lot. Very disappointing.
Everyone in the city is clearly just using their hotels and attractions as a cash cow. Doing the bare minimum, if at all. A waiter at one of the restaurants had the gall to ask my partner for a tip when he paid with a credit card. I guess the waiter assumed he was American (he's not) and used to tipping 20%. We didn't tip because the service is atrocious and the servers don't expect Bulgarians to tip. Very off putting.

A wonderful mix of old and new in this historical center of beautiful Bulgaria. Lively and also cool. And bulgarians are decent people. Great restaurants and atmosphere - top recommendation is Restaurant Shtastliveca in the center of the town. Great food and great service by waiters who even know how to serve a good wine. Excellent! Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of Bulgaria during the 2nd Bulgarian Empire 1185-1396. Approx 220 km from Sofia - same distance to Varna and the Bulgarian Rivieria and wonderful Varna at the Black Sea. Beautiful trip by car in a stunning nature.
I liked everything! The hotel is very clean, the rooms are spacious ,comfortable and very warm during the winter. From our room 332 we had a great view of Tsarevets.Staff is great as well!Delicious breakfast! The hotel is located not far from the main street but there is no sidewalk so walking to the city center is somehow tricky, however as we witnessed the taxi costs only 3 lv to hotel Yantra,3.50 to Tsarevets and 4 lv to Mother Bulgaria monument.Overall exellent value for money and strongly recommended!
Excellent new hotel at perfect location - just 3 minutes walk to the Tsarevetz fortress and 7 minutes walk to the Samovodska charshia. At the same time the hotel neigborhood is very quiet.
New modern and spacious apartment with fully equipped kitchen. Comfort beds, very clean and big bathroom.
There is secured garage with private entrance (with limited parking spots).
The staff is very smile, nice and helpfull. This place is a gem for the Veliko Turnovo.
A nice small hotel inside the hospital area, so quiet neighborhood. Easy to find and walking distance from touristic area. Nice equipped kitchen and very clean "hospital" like the rooms. Nice hot water, nice beds, good parking space. Very nice and helpful staff. You should visit Tsarevets Fortress and Gurko Street and especially the Artisan street (Samovodska Charshia). And Arbanasi village.
Central location with great view, valet (parking) service, "real" shower (noteworthy for Bulgaria), no hassle at check-in or check-out. Internet fine, cleanliness fine. Can walk directly into center, and also see views at the spot. No noise inside hotel (also no bar inside hotel open, no drinks of any sort ... I thought that was the point of a hotel ....).
The host is a shining example of true hospitality and I felt home at once. I had a beautiful authentic Bulgarian room in the heart of the beautiful city of Veliko Tarnovo. Stoyan told me the guesthouse is named after his daughter. My stay at this place was truly a wonderful experience. Thank you Stoyan!
This is a very special hotel with an incredible view of the Yantra river gorge on one of the oldest streets in Veliko Tarnovo. Our room was very spacious, comfortably furnished and had a wonderful balcony! The staff was very courteous and helpful! We would stay at Hotel Gurko again and again!!!
Very nice, comfortable, clean, business oriented hotel located in a garden with gorgeous garden view opened to surrounded hills. The hotel is within a reasonable distance from center city. 25-30 mins to walk or 5 mins by cab. The staff was exceptionally helpful and responsive to every request
The studio is great for a couple's retreat! The hosts are very polite and responsive. The view is amazing, and the huge terrace is perfect for romantic evenings. We were able to stay with our dog, which was great. The place has everything you need for a short stay in Veliko Tarnovo.
The Hotel is situated in the Center of Veliko Turnovo and 5 minutes walking distance from every Major Sightseeing destination in the town. Staff was extremely nice and the rooms were clean and comfy with walls of natural elements as wood, brick and stone.
The hotel made a reservation for me when my booking.com reservation failed. We had a massive snow storm and I needed to find a place to stay while electricity was restored to my home. The staff were very helpful and welcoming!
We had a big room with beds for four persons. And the airco was a welcome addition for the hot weather at the time we were in Veliko Turnovo.
The owner of the property gave us good tips about sightseeing and good restaurants.
Everything was super nice, room was perfect, staff was friendly, great location as well, definitely will be staying here again if I visit Veliko Turnovo in the future.
My girlfriend and I had a wonderfull stay at this cozy hotel. The warm ambiance, attentive staff, and comfortable room made it a perfect weekend getaway.
