You should explore the countryside and the villages. The colours and the views are amazing. People are warm and hospitable wherever you go. They are very cultural and want to keep it that way. The food is varied and can be delicious if you do your research before you get there.

Rantepao is a perfect location to explore the Torajah area; Torajah is a mainly christian area on a mainly islamitic Island, with very typical ceremonies, often related to death and funerals. We took the bus from Makassar which takes about 10 hours to get to Rantepao, but it is an interesting journey.

Amazing and outlandish culture and scenery surrounding the city. Traditional housing can even be seen within the city centre. The scenery outside Rantapao is glorious, and travel with a guide highly recommended to discover the intricacies of this very different culture, provide local employment, avoid causing offence or excessive traipsing on private/family land, and because a decent map is hard to find. Take a day (or a few) in the city itself. It is safe and surprisingly sweet when you slow down and take it in. As in so much of Sulawesi, people are gentle, honest and kind.

Perfect place to stay (better a bit out of the city center) to enjoy nature and explore the area of Toraja. The city itself not much to do except some good restaurants but a great starting point for excursions in the Toraja region.

loved everything about this place - it is not fancy, but it is very clean and the Hostess is fantastic. we arrived late and she made dinner for us when we got there. The traditional meal she cooked the next day was also great, chicken in bamboo. There is a full bathroom outside the house with a hot water shower, western toilet and two sinks - very clean. The traditional house would not be able to accommodate a bathroom in the building itself. This is an experience to stay in real Toraja house - it is not a fancy hotel - but it is great!!

The Homestay is located a little bit out of the city of Rantepao which was great in my opinion. The nature around the homestay was better than the busy traffic of the city. The owner of the place is very nice and a tourguide if you need one. He was already occupied but luckily there was another guide named Yulius who was amazing and helped with my travel plan, see some of the ceremonies and a 2 day hike. Good place to stay for your activities in and around the Tana Toraja region.

Very nice staff! The first day I arrived, they already booked me a guide, so I could do a tour the next day. I took the evening bus, but I was aloud to stay at the hotel all day, and they even dropped me at the bus station! The room itself was very clean, the room is cleaned every day. Breakfast was good. Location very good, less than five minutes from the Main Street of Rantepao by tuktuk. The building itself is very high, which gives an amazing view of the city.

I really enjoyed our stay at the Sanduk. Its located in a very green area so it's nice and pieceful. The owner is very welcoming and always there to help. You feel like home here. We also got a pickup from the bus stop in the early morning and a early check in and late check out. We could use the kitchen and the shower is nice and warm. And its very clean ! Definitely recommend this place if your staying in rantepao.

Probably the best place and experience we've ever had. It's a bit more expensive than your regular accommodation but if you can spend an extra 10 euros a night come here, it's so so worth it. If you've been traveling for a while in SE Asia this will feel like a 5 star hotel. The host is so accommodating, her tour was incredible and the food is the best we've had in Indonesia. Hope some day we can come back here.

This homestay was wonderful! The host was very kind, helpful, flexible and an amazing cook (breakfast and dinner). She organized a guide and motorbike, which was perfect for the 4 days we stayed with Manai. The homestay is located a bit outside busy Rantepao surrounded by traditional Toraja-houses, in a quite (exept the chickens) and green evironement - beautiful! We would recommend the stay anytime.

SARAH, the owner, is amazing. If you stay anywhere else in Rantepao you have dropped the ball. I real homestay and felt like party of the FAM. Especially, making dinner with CHEF Melissa. I got the Sambal recipe I have been looking for! There is a reason the Lonely Planet highlights the Castle for Toraja! Don’t stay anywhere else!!!!

Conveniently located in Rantepao, and a good base for your local tours. It was clean and had a pool for cooling off and restaurants on site. The property was very pretty! A good option if you are looking for more than just the basic accommodations elsewhere in the region. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

The room is clean and the space is huge. The owner Mr Raub serves a delicious breakfast, especially that glass of juice, better then outside restaurants. Honestly, it's worth it then you paid. Like other Sulawesi people I have met, Mr Raub is a very helpful and friendly owner too.
