Hiraizumi was the very first place where my husband and I reached, once in Japan: there, directly from Narita airport. We wanted to visit a "real" place, non for tourists, rural, and so it was. Even though it's not very famous in the West, in Hiraizumi there are very important Buddhist temples, Chuson-ji in particular and also Motsu-ji. In addition to being close to the station, the Suzuki family home allows you to reach every point of historical and cultural interest, as well as the thermal baths (onsen), in a short time on foot. Mr. Suzuki are excellent hosts, very kind and patient with foreigners. The language barrier (they do NOT speak English) was overcome in a fun way that allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the country we were in. Hiraizumi will be missed.
