University of Coimbra
The University of Coimbra dates back to the year 1290 – making it one of Europe’s oldest universities. Within the walls you’ll find hidden treasures such as the ornate Capela de São Miguel and the 18th-century Biblioteca Joanina, with more than 300,000 medieval books and manuscripts lining its shelves.

Amazing grounds and full of history.
Amazing grounds and full of history. Views are to die for if the hill up doesn't get you first. Try the small electric Botanica bus which goes up the hill through the extensive grounds and gardens. Catch it on the bridge near Burger King

Don't miss the University. Amazing. Great views from the main University quadrangle and history everywhere. The library is one of the oldest in Europe. One of the highlights of my entire 3 months in Europe.

Get a former student or instructor to take you on the tour.
Get a former student or instructor to take you on the tour. They know all of the inside stories and the best places to see and eat & drink at. Ours got us into a private fade concert and a tiny little out of the way wine shop where the wine & food was local, great & inexpensive. You can get such a guide by going on line

Get there in the morning for your ticket to the library. There are only so many people allowed in at a time. Then explore the area while you wait to get into the library. Biology and Physics area much better than we thought they would be. Tile in the church beautiful

Really rich history surrounding the University.
Really rich history surrounding the University. A very nice place to have a walk around. I will say that the admission price they charge for the tours of the chapel/library/palace are a bit more than should be based on what you have access to. You are better off just walking the free parts on your own. The library is sort of cool but the viewing area is small and you have a very short time to see anything. The chapel is small and nothing spectacular.

Loved the Library and the Chapel of St Michaels.
Loved the Library and the Chapel of St Michaels. We took a taxi uphill to the University and then walked back down. Saved us time. We were there during end of school year so we got to see the students in their black robes, photos of groups lined up in front of the stairs, and student tossing their robes into the air! I think that made our visit more special.

GREAT EXPERIENCE. Very clean. Fantastic location. Quiet. Washer and dryer. Gift of pastel and port wine in apartment. Ismael kindly offered and provided us a ride to and from the train station. Firm, comfortable bed. Spot-on restaurant recommendations by Ismael. 6 minute climb via nearby stairway to University of Coimbra. Nice view of river from apt windows.
The owner was really nice and helpful, the apartment looked brand new and exactly as advertised, and it was well located (1 min from big pedestrian street and walking distance from the University of Coimbra).
We had a very enjoyable experience staying here while visiting Coimbra. It was nice to have our own little apartment vs a hotel room, and we enjoyed breakfast at the table under the beautiful windows in the morning while we planned our day. The location is fantastic and is right next to the aqueduct, botanic gardens (must visit!!) and University of Coimbra. We found several nice restaurants and pubs nearby, too. We would not hesitate to stay here again!
excellent food options and kitchen setting. close to the university of Coimbra. excellent bed and room amenities. there’s a refrigerator in your room. awesome.
We stayed in an apartment on the first floor. The apartment was spacious, clean, well decorated and well-equipped for short or long-term stay. The living room has a beautiful view of Torre de Almedina. The little plaza in font of the apartment is a hot spot for night life with live music and restaurants. The location is great, as it is at the crossroad for tourist destinations. The University of Coimbra, Se Velha, University Botanical garden and several museums including Machado de Castro are all within short walks uphill.
The location of the hotel is excellent… very close to the University of Coimbra. The hotel is a refurbished old house that is beautiful and comfortable. we had two rooms with a shared common area with kitchenette and sofas. the staff was extremely friendly. They gave us great recommendations for lunch and dinner, they also welcomed us with a bottle of champagne and cake, and gave us cookies when we checked out. the rooms are small, but comfortable, and really nicely decorated.
It is a beautiful property right below the Joanina Library at the University of Coimbra. The room was very comfortable and the staff exceedingly friendly and helpful. They have a lovely restaurant that we chose to eat at for dinner. The food was delicious and the wine recommendation was spot on. The ambiance in the back patio area completed the experience. They also provided an ample and varied breakfast buffet.
The place is ideally located in the old town, close to the University of Coimbra. Check-in was smooth and my room was cleaned right before my arrival. The shared kitchen and dining/living room are well-equipped and beautiful.
